In 1324, Mansa Musa embarked on a Pilgrimage to Mecca which was comprised of 60,000 people and an immeasurable amount of gold. Being known for his luxurious lifestyle, during his stop in Cairo, his lavish spending and gift giving was so extensive he diluted the value of gold by 10-25%, impacting Cairo's economy for at least 12 years afterwards.
This journey was so epic that it was chronicled on the 1375 medieval map known as The Catalan Map which is still in existence to this very day, housed at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Of major importance, The Catalan Map's creator depicted an image of Mansa Musa with a lump of gold held in his right hand and a staff in his left.
